If you've registered yourself at the
official site you might have made a Sims avatar already. Maxis has enhanced this feature last week, by adding a few new bits of content. In the spirit of Open for Business they have added a chef hat, fast food hat, deep dive helm, and apron which you can now use to create your own avatar. If you're logged in, all you need to do is
edit your avatar.

Those who visit the
official site a lot, probably know that you can set your own avatar if you're logged in. This little Create-A-Sim tool has been slightly improved: Maxis has added several items inspired by Nightlife to it. You'll find a new top hat, pearl necklace, cat eye glasses, raver goggles, and a tuxedo when creating or changing your Sim. If you want to see what the new items look like, go and
edit your avatar.

The news that The Sims 2 would be
unsuitable for Teens has made a great impact in the community. In our previous post we already pointed to several discussion threads. Almost all fans of the game who have participated in discussions disagree with Jack Thompson. Read on for a very brief summary of what's generally been said in the discussions, as well as some links.

MaxoidMonkey is one of the creatures who often can be seen as Maxis representative on the
official site. That same MaxoidMonkey is now at the E3, and will be blogging with some updates. In "
MaxoidMonkeys E3 Extravaganza" there isn't much to see yet, except the message that MM has arrived in LA. Updates will be posted in the near future though. See the
blog to read what MaxoidMonkey has to say. You can go to the same page through the renewed intro at the official site's front page.
[Update 20:30] In the blog Monkey has posted a bit about the first E3 day, during which he visited the EA booth, and checked out Nightlife. He doesn't bring any news, except that he met Evil Knievel and that he'll bring some news regarding the console and handheld versions of The Sims 2 at the end of day 2. The three pictures below were also posted in his blog (click the thumbnails for larger versions).

This week's Simday is a small one. There are links to the
IGN interview about Nightlife, and two mailing lists:
The Sim Insider and the
Sims 2 Scoop. With these mailing lists you can stay up to date with the latest news on the Sims 2, and the Sims 2 Nightlife. Finally,
iFilm has featured the
Strangerhood. You can see
the feature and rate the trailer and first episode of the show.
Other than that, there's a new
ShiShi Frou Frou Fu Lion by MaxoidMonkey. It's an ancient, Chinese statue, that you can put in your game for decoration. The
April Fool's scissors have also been reuploaded, but it's unsure if anything has changed. There's also a new poll on the
official site, and members got an e-mail announcing a spring cleaning on the exchange. Maxis is preparing to clean out the database again, and you are asked to help by cleaning up your own MySim page. That means you should clean up your guestbook, and delete double or unwanted uploads from the exchange.
[Update 19:50] With thanks to Martin, we've updated the links to the mailing lists.

A little later than usual, this SimDay report. There are a few things on the official site since earlier this week. Of course there's the
Nightlife Announcement and a link to the
GameSpy interview. Other than that there are three things exclusive to the
official site. The first is a new Nightlife theme for MySims Pages. To set yours to this new theme, go to the
Modify Theme page. This is the ninth theme available for MySim pages, making them more and more varied. There are 4 new small artworks on those MySim pages from Nightlife. You can see them below.
Besides that, Maxis has opened a new BBS section. In the
Challenges & Contests BBS you can discuss challenges like the Legacy Challenge, make up and showcase your own challenges or contests and more. And Maxis is already doing so, by holding another new contest. With the "
Nightlife Styles" contest you can get your creation included in the expansion pack. Two outfits will win: one male and one female outfit. These will be included in the expansion, and the winners will win a pack signed by the Maxis team. These outfits must be created with the Body Shop, and you can submit up to three outfits. As usual you have to be at least 13 to enter, and you must live in the US or Canada. For more information see the
contests page and the
complete rules.

This week's SimDay brings a few new things. The first is the winning of an
AIAS award by the Sims 2. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has awarded the game as best simulation game of 2004. Last year Maxis
won two AIAS awards as well, for Bustin' Out and Superstar. Furthermore there's news of an interview with Will Wright on
The Onion. The website interviewed Will about creating the Sims and SimCity series. He talks about how he gets inspired, but also about things he's tried but never worked out very well, and how SimAnt more or less turned into the Sims:
"There was a little simulation of a guy who lived in the house who would sit and watch television, get food from the fridge, mow the lawn, stuff like that. I realized at the end of SimAnt that the simulation we built for the ants was almost more intelligent than for the guy, because the guy was being done using traditional programming, whereas the ants were done using this distributed environmental intelligence of the pheromone trails. I began wondering, could we build a more robust simulation of human behavior if we adopted this ant model, where we distribute the intelligence not through the agents, but through the environment? Then I started experimenting with some techniques, and that got the ball rolling for The Sims."
To read the rest of the article, which mentions a lot more than just that, head over to
the special. Finally there's a link to
yesterday's preview, which we've already mentioned here.
[Update 4 February, 23:30] SimDay Part 2 has been posted as well, with two new things. The first is a survey about the Urbz. If you got the game, you can let Maxis know what you think of it. It's quite possible they will use the information for future games. Remarkable is the mention of the Urbz 2 during the survey. There have been some
rumours about this title already, and although the survey in no way confirms it it's not any less likely now. The second thing is a new Valentine's Day look for MySim Pages. If you're feeling romantic you can apply it to yours, or you can check out
MaxoidMonkey's page for a preview.

This week's SimDay is a fairly big one, with quite a bit about movies. First of all there's an interview with
MaxoidPlumpBob. She (Kerie Kimbrell) is a movie director at Maxis. In the interview she gives some tips about creating your own movies.
Read the interview to get the details. Along with this, Maxis has made it possible to rate the videos posted by members on their MySim pages.
There's a lot more about movies and the Sims 2 University inside...
