1. Community Interview with Will Wright [Update]

Recently EA revealed to fansites that a first expansion for The Sims Medieval is in the making: "The Sims Medieval: Dark Nights." To accompany the announcement, several sites were invited to have a joint interview Will Wright. We'll be posting the full interview soon, once we get the announcement. For now we are already allowed to post a few snippets of the interview:
Your latest project is Bar Karma. Have you ever experienced some bad karma in a bar?
*laughs* Well I don't really visit bars that often. But I did to go a bar once, where they had this specific kind of beer. Now I'm not a beer person myself, but a friend told me that I had to try it. So I ordered one and went back to my friends. But before I made it to the table, someone bumps into me and... well let's just say that that was the first beer shower I ever had. But I'm not sure if that's a case of bad karma, or just clumsiness of that other person.
Have you ever considered a position as mayor, given the experience you have with that area, because of the SimCity games?
Well that's a good question. No I've never really aspired to be a mayor of a city. I guess my passion lies more with designing games that involve mayors, rather than actually being one.
If you were a Sim, wouldn’t you hate it that you had to take a shower so often to get your hygiene motive green?
*laughs* I think you have a point there. Sims do get to take a shower a lot don't they? I think that was one of the hard points in developing the game. We really needed to find a balance between annoying and fun in the motives.
[Update] As you may have guessed, this was an April Fool's joke. There is no interview with Will Wright: all of the above was made up. Did you fall for it?

EA has just announced the third expansion pack for the Sims 3, called Late Night. Sounding much like a remake of Nightlife for the Sims 3, the new pack will introduce hot tubs, vampires in a "vibrant, active downtown scene." Sims can become a local celebrity, member of a music band, mixologist, director and more. Rod Humble also said there will also be some new building tools. The pack will be out this autumn. Read on for the full press release and product description. Below you can also get a video and several screenshots.

4. New Patch introduces Dynamic Ad Functionality

A new Sims 3 patch was
released today. It introduces various features seen in the Ambitions expansion pack (also released today), like the combined message UI, the Edit Town mode, and the ability to use patterns on ceilings. Game modifications (mods) also get some better support, as placing them in a special folder is now possible out of the box. More remarkable, however, is the support for dynamic advertising technologies by IGA Worldwide. The
EULA of The Sims 3 contains information about this technology, specifically what data EA can collect. This includes IP address, which is removed after the game session, a unique installation/console ID number, how long, where in the game and from which angle advertisements are shown. To prevent ads from being shown and tracked, disconnecting from the Internet is the recommended option. The EULA does say no information to personally identify you is collected through this mechanism. Also there are currently no plans to actually use the technology, but with the patch it does become an option. This means we may be watching real-life advertisements from The Sims 3 games sooner or later. Further information can be found in the
Update page. To download and install the patch, you can use your Sims 3 launcher.

With less than two weeks to go until The Sims 3 Ambitions is released, The Sims Zone got a sneak peek at the game. At EA's office in the Netherlands, we spent about 2.5 hours on the latest game in the franchise, checking out various bits and pieces the pack has to offer. Although we weren't able to check out too much within this limited time, we did get some good first impressions of what you'll be able to get your hands on soon. So, what are you waiting for? The link to the preview? The preview is right here!

Due to a failing server and tech support being closed during the Easter holidays, this site was unavailable for over two days. Good news is that we have now moved the site over to a newer, faster and hopefully more reliable server. If you're reading this, that means everything has gone well and you can now enjoy our site again as usual. Some things may not work properly yet (most likely one of them is user registration): we are working on resolving such issues as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience during this process.
7. Simlish to become official language in France [Update]

Rumours are currently spreading about Simlish becoming an official language soon. In France, to be precise. Due to the huge popularity of the Sims games in France, the French parliament will take a vote tomorrow to make Simlish an official language of the country. The main reasoning behind it is that many teenage girls talk Simlish in everyday life. As such, the made-up language has gained a lot of popularity in the past decade. Opponents say that French should be the single official language in France, like it has always been. It is currently unclear if all French colonies will also have to accept Simlish as official language. If the vote is accepted, schools will probably start teaching the language soon, once all the teachers have brushed up their Simlish vocabulary and grammar. We'll keep you up to date with this news, and let you know as soon as any officials respond on this matter.
[Update] Of course the above is an April Fool's joke. As far as we know, Simlish is an official language only in SimCity and nowhere else. And the French? They'll keep using French as their main language.

Ten years ago the first edition of The Sims saw the daylight, after several years of development by Will Wright and his team. In the meantime we've seen two more sequels, various spin-offs, Sims games on any platform you can game on and of course a ton of expansion and stuff packs. The Sims team is celebrating by giving away some
freebies. The Sims is a hugely successful franchise; expansion packs often top the sales charts, resulting in over $2.5 billion in revenue to date. From its launch in 2000 to 2004, The Sims was the best selling PC game worldwide; The Sims 1 for the first four years, The Sims 2 in 2004. The Sims 3 was EA's biggest launch ever, with 1.4 million copies sold in the first week, again being the best selling game of the year worldwide. Congratulations, EA!

10. New Patch and Create a World

Today EA released two things for the Sims 3: first of all there's a patch for The Sims 3 and World Adventures. The huge list of issues that are solved is in the patch notes. The patch itself can be downloaded through the Sims 3 launcher. Furthermore Sims 3 fans who are tired of Sunset Valley and Riverview now have the option to create their own brand new neighborhoods with the Create a World tool. The freebie is still in beta but it should allow you to get started at making a new town. The Create a World page has the download.
[Update 17 December] We've received information from EA that the new patch causes many problems, including the game not starting up anymore if the patch fails to install properly. If new information or a new patch appears to solve these issues, we'll let you know. Until then it may be better not to install the new patch.
