221. New Sims 2 video
Written on Tuesday 2 September 2003 at 17:28 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Gamers Hell has posted a 12 minute video of The Sims 2 a few days ago. It shows a lot of in-game footage, but unfortunately the quality - both sound and video - isn't too great. The in-game stuff is quite much like what we saw in the Fragland video interview. There's a lot of noise in the background from other games, like James Bond which can quite obviously be recognised at some point in the movie. We again see the hot-tub scene where a sim gets electrocuted by lightning. We also see some more of the create-a-sim and the genetics. The video has a voice-over from a Maxis Producer. Unfortunately, due to all the noise, it's not easy to understand all of it. It comes from the Game Convention held in Germany a while ago. You can download the video (68 Mb) from this page. It requires Windows Media Player 9 (or the WMP 9 Codecs).

In the past few weeks there has been a lot of news about The Sims. Besides the news we've already reported about, there've been items that we've missed in the past few weeks. Here's a round-up of all the news that hasn't been posted about yet, containing screenshots, developer diaries, and much, much more...

223. SimDay: Interview and Article
Written on Thursday 14 August 2003 at 23:37 by Steve - 0 comments.
It's Thursday and it's SimDay. This SimDay Maxis have not really done anything for us. It's also been a quiet week in the community. For SimDay, Maxis have given us links to an interview by Computer And Video Games.com, and an article at GameSpot; both on The Sims 2.

The Computer And Video Games.com interview, with Destry Davison (Associate Producer of The Sims 2), contains very little we haven't heard many times in many other places. It tells us again about the "Life Score" and DNA. One subject it does touch on that I have heard very little about is the subject of sex. On this subject Davidson says:
"We have to pass the ratings board because we have such a wide audience. So we can't get too steamy. Under the covers, tastefully done, that kind of thing."
To read the full interview by Computer And Video Games.com click here.

Unfortunately the article at GameSpot, although an interesting read, it does overlap somewhat with the interview, and many other articles that are floating around. It does however give us this little piece of information, which I certainly did not know about:
"The face designing tool will let you design two prospective parents and then actually see how their children might look."

224. Sims 2 articles, shots and a movie
Written on Sunday 20 July 2003 at 00:28 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
There's 1 new preview, a developer diary (part 1), 2 screenshots and a new movie all of The Sims 2. Most of it comes from GameSpot, but let's first check out this preview at EuroGamer. That one's pretty much like what we've seen before. They first tell us about an old game on Commodore64, which was called "Alter Ego". Then they go on about The Sims 2. They haven't been able to play it themselves, they only got to watch a demo. That demo is a few months old now, and the review doesn't give very much news. Then there's a designer's diary, the first part of a series in which designers and developers of Maxis will tell about the progress of The Sims 2. First up is Tim LeTourneau, who talks 2 pages long about the beginning of the sequel to our favourite game...

225. SimDay: Music and a hidden survey
Written on Thursday 3 July 2003 at 22:38 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This week's SimDay seems to be pretty nice. There are several interesting, but also some less interesting things. First of all there's the official announcement of The Sims Bustin' Out on GBA (click here to read), and a link to GameSpot's interview about it (more info right here). Then there's a link to an article at Wired News talking about Sims photo albums...

226. New E3 Sims 2 Video
Written on Tuesday 17 June 2003 at 23:40 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The Norwegian site Itavisen has posted a review together with a video. Although I don't completely understand the review (because it's Norwegian), it just seems to list the features we already know. Nothing to interesting there. However, the video is interesting, as it shows some more E3 footage. It shows a lot of kissing and some playing in a hot tub, including the Sim that gets fried in the tub by lightning. To play the video, you need Windows Media Player 9. You can find the link to the video near the bottom of the review, behind a link that says "HER"). The review can be checked out right here.

227. The Sims 2 interview
Written on Tuesday 3 June 2003 at 00:49 by ChEeTaH - 2 comments.
An interview with Margaret Ng, producer of The Sims 2.0, has appeared at FragLand. It's a video-interview that's a whopping 86 Mb big. Unfortunately that's too big for me to download right now with my 56k modem, so I can't give you many details. However, thanks to SimsZone.de I can tell you that it'll show some floating in the hot tub and some rain. There are also some ingame examples of how Sims will interact socially. The whole interview contains several in-game shots like these. You can get it from this page.

228. Another interview with Will Wright
Written on Wednesday 28 May 2003 at 00:45 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Besides GameSpy, Boomtown has also taken the time to sit down with Will Wright, designer of The Sims, for about an hour. Besides talking about The Sims 2, gaming, other games, and a few other things, he talks about the origin of The Sims:
"The Sims came about from two sources. Firstly there was Sim Ant, which I was pleased with because of the behavioural models of the ants. I wondered whether it was possible to assign similar behaviours to a human being in a video game. Also at the time I was reading a lot of architectural books that ended up sparking the idea of customising your house."
It's all quite nice to read, but you won't find too much new stuff in it. You can read everything about it right here.

229. The Sims 2 Interview
Written on Monday 19 May 2003 at 00:20 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
There's still some stuff appearing from the E3 last week. There was already a 20-minute interview with Will Wright at GameSpy earlier, and now GameSpot has posted another interview with Will Wright. Although it's much shorter (just about 97 seconds) and less interesting, this interview has a nice thing for the fans: it's a video. So if you've always wanted to know what Will really looks like (instead of as a Sim), it's worth to check it out from this page. In the interview Will talks briefly about The Sims 2 and its new features, like this: "If they have a screwed up childhood, they'll be a screwed up adult. They might have to go to therapy". Sims will be much more responsive and aware of the environment around them, according to Will (we'll take his word for it). Although the simulation will be more complicated, they want to keep the interface as simple as The Sims 1. Will also says the console verison is somewhere in between The Sims 1 and The Sims 2. There isn't anything real news in the interview, unfortunately.

230. Sims 2 Preview
Written on Friday 16 May 2003 at 16:07 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
GameMarshal has been at the E3 watching The Sims 2 as well, and they got to see the movie - apparantly in extended form as they see a few things not seen in the GameSpot clip. Perhaps IGN Insiders are able to see everything, but I can't tell that for sure. As it's an official trailer, the whole thing will probably be made available as download by Maxis or EA themselves. Besides telling about watching the video, GameMarshal also went to talk with Charles London, creative director of Maxis. The main feature talked about is the DNA, which is quite life-like: "Dominant and recessive features such as eye or skin color are also decided based on the DNA of the parents and passed onto the baby". They also talk a bit about how much you can change the looks of your Sim. They also mention a thing that's new to us:
"The Sims 2 will include new animation styles, facial expression based on the situation along with mouth movements when Sims talk. There will be weekdays and weekends, and your Sims will establish a work schedule. So while mom or dad could be working on Saturday or Sunday, the kids will stay home since there is no school on the weekend."
Finally parents can take some days off without the danger of being sacked, and kids can stay at home to play with their friends, without being sent to military school. Nice indeed. You can check the whole preview out right here.
