211. (Old) Sims 2 Videos
Written on Friday 2 January 2004 at 23:48 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Today a couple of old videos were spotted again, which I noticed I'd never told about yet (oddly enough). Thanks to Hikikomori, fabtep and Robert at the SimsZone.de Forums for the tips. You can find them at a Japanese site, forgamer.net. Go to this page, then scroll down a lot, until you see three items directly below each other, each with a screenshot, posted at 5/17 (yes, that's 17 May 2003 :-D). Each item has one video, just click the link (the purple bit of text) in each item to download. They're 5.4, 8.7 and 15.7 Mb each. Note that the interface of CaSIE in the 5.4 Mb one (the lowest of the three) is very outdated. The interface has changed a lot since then. Recent screenshots show the new interface. You can find those in the news archive at this site, just have a search for it.

212. Sims 2 News
Written on Tuesday 23 December 2003 at 22:59 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
A lot of new screenshots of The Sims 2 have been posted today and yesterday. The first set of 5 comes from IGN. A couple of them show some hot action (nothing really explicit though), so be warned. They're all quite nice to see, and once again show the detail of the Sims. 4 others have been posted at TheSimsResource. You can also find the IGN ones there, but the 4 different ones all show some military action. Two show a guy being picked up for work by helicopter and truck, another shows a full bathroom, and the final one is some training going on. Click the site's links to see the shots for yourself. Finally, some articles. The first of the two is a preview at New Wave Gaming. It's probably not that interesting to most people, as it doesn't provide any new info. It also mentions mid-february as release date, but as none has ever been officially given, that shouldn't be considered official or even accurate. You can read the whole article yourself on this very page. More interesting is an interview with Lucy Bradshaw at Total Video Games. Here's a little quote from the article:
"Yes, this is a real leap from the original Sims in so many ways. Creating believable human characters in our Sims is a pretty huge undertaking. The better they look, the more fidelity players expect of their behaviour. By electing to give our Sims better looks, facial animations, and allowing the player to get closer to them, we needed to advance the AI significantly. And, yes, getting closer and having new animations has forced us to consider the boundaries that we want to maintain as well."
You can find that interview by clicking here. Enjoy all this new stuff!

213. Sims 2 Fly-through video
Written on Saturday 13 December 2003 at 22:19 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
If you read the last Designer's Diary at GameSpot, or checked this site some time ago, you probably have seen a new video of The Sims 2 already as well. It's a silent fly through a neighborhood. That video, showing stuff like boats, a rainbow and the neighborhood in general, is now also available at the official Sims 2 site. If you missed it last time, be sure to check it out right here.

214. Tim LeTourneau Interview
Written on Thursday 4 December 2003 at 01:10 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
The British magazine PCZone has had an interview with Tim LeTourneau, senior producer of The Sims 2. Of course the topic of the interview is The Sims 2, but also the reason of the success of The Sims:
"At Maxis we feel the key reason The Sims is so popular with both male and female gamers is because people can easily identify and relate with the Sims and their environment. Players become sucked into this alternative sand box reality, its gameplay based on the key desires we all have in our every day lives. However in the Sims world things are very quirky and fun, we don't have to live with consequence of our actions, good or bad in quite the same way!"
That's only a (very) small bit of the whole article. If you want to read it completely, click here to see it.

215. Newsround
Written on Tuesday 18 November 2003 at 00:26 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
I've been away for a few days, and haven't really been able to keep the news up-to-date. So here's a newsflash with the latest news of the past couple of days. We have SimDay, and a lot of screenshots, as well as a magazine article. First the screenshots: there are 8 new Bustin' Out screenshots from GameSpot. They're for the GBA version, and you can see them right here. Some more Sims 2 shots are available at The Sims 2 Creation. Click "Screenshots", and then follow the "Les Screenshots à voir absolument!" link. The last 6 of them are new. Another site, Sims2Center has posted a scan of a 2-page article from PC Gamer magazine. Click here to load it. At SimDay there were a few new things. The first thing is a little layout change - the "BBS/Fans" item has been renamed to Community. Of course there was also a chat with MaxisProducer Cooper Buckingham and Lead Tester Sean Hugunin from Maxis. Check out the transcripts. You can now also download the Makin' Magic commercial, which you download it from this page. A new Makin' Magic wallpaper has been added as well, which shows Mortimer dancing with the skeleton maid. Go right here to download it. Finally there are some links to several reviews of Makin' Magic, which you can find over here. That's the quick newsround, of course it'll be kept up-to-date as before again from now on.

216. The Sims 2 Media
Written on Sunday 9 November 2003 at 23:50 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
This weekend we can provide some media for The Sims 2 again, directly from Maxis. This week there's one movie and 2 screenshots (of which one old one). But first: a The Sims 2 newsletter. Maxis has launched a new one for The Sims 2, "The Sims 2 Scoop", which will provide in-depth info about The Sims 2: screens, videos, special offers and more. You can sign up for that at http://preferences.fun.ea.com/ea/mf_TheSims2.asp. On to the movie: remember the shy and outgoing girls who starred in the filmstrip 2 weeks ago? They've now been seen in full motion, telling the same story: who kisses the boy next door first? We can give it to you in two versions: high quality (14 Mb) and low quality (3 Mb). You'll need QuickTime to see it. Finally, the two screenshots, which this time show how easy you can change the entire look of a room. Note that these images are quite big and might take a while to load:

217. SimDay
Written on Thursday 30 October 2003 at 23:24 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
It's SimDay again, and this week there's quite a lot about Makin' Magic in it. First of all, there's the chat, the exchange and the GameSpot review we wrote about earlier. To make it complete, there's also a press release about the shipping of Makin' Magic, right here. Next is the second review, from IGN. They're very positive like GameSpot and rate it 8.2 out of 10. There are a few sidenotes though, for instance that they find "the magical nature of the expansion charming but incompatible with the basic concept of the series" and that the scrolling around is still a bit jerky. No word about annoying bugs like in Superstar though. You can read it right here, of course with some screenshots. Now about the other the Sims games: Maxis has posted a sneak preview of the Sims 2 Preview CD that comes with Makin' Magic. A preview of a preview that we've posted some time ago. You can now download it from this page at the official Sims 2 site. Next there's an interview about Bustin' Out with Mike Perry, producer of the game. There's nothing real new in it. If you're interested though, go here. Finally, there's a new download for Superstar, which will bring Sarah McLachlan to Studio Town. If you have Superstar, you can get it right here. That's all again for this week.

218. New Sims 2 Video
Written on Thursday 16 October 2003 at 22:25 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Fansite WorldSims has posted a new video of The Sims 2. However, it doesn't seem to be too interesting as it isn't more than a collection of screenshots put after each other like a slideshow, with some techno music in the background. There are 3 versions: one Low Resolution (3 Mb), High resolution (10 Mb) and "Ultra High Resolution" (112 Mb, and that's NOT a typo!). For most people the 10 Mb version should be good enough though, the "Ultra High" version looks sharper, but it takes a lot more space and time to download for a little bit more quality. If you want to see the screenshots in the quality as they were posted, search back in our news archive for all the mentions of Sims 2 screenshots and movies we've spotted. If you just want a quick overview of what The Sims 2 will look like without having to go to a ton of different sites, then this clip might be worth downloading. If you're interested, head over to WorldSims to download it.

219. Chat transcript
Written on Tuesday 14 October 2003 at 12:05 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Last Simday's chat about Sexy sims and more has been held, and the transcript has been posted. There are a few news things in it: "SACAS" (the Create a Sim tool, read more here) will be released next month. It will also be possible to import Sims 1 3D models (e.g. Meshes) to The Sims 2, and you can give Sims tattoos. The Newbies, the Goths, mr. Grim Reaper and the Alians will also be back, but the Tragic Clown has left the game. There will also be more romance and kisses (like the "Deep really meaningful long passionate memorable while you keep your hands busy" kiss, as Luc said), but also divorces and affairs. Weddings will take longer than in The Sims 1, and Sims of the same gender will also be able to get married. The limit of Sims in a family is 8 again, as before. Maxis will still decide whether to implement locks on the bathroom doors or not. Teens won't be able to play, but Adults will be - in full 3D. There will be a lot of options for custom content - you can put MP3s and videos in the game, and there will be "major" options to manage your custom content within the game. Finally, Sims will also pick their nose or scratch their butt. There are a lot of references to custom content in the chat, and there's a lot more than I listed here. To read all the questions and answers, click here.

220. The Sims 2 Screens
Written on Friday 12 September 2003 at 20:58 by ChEeTaH - 0 comments.
Fansite SimsZone.de has posted 4 new screenshots of The Sims 2. They show a man in quite a bit of details, and we're watching him cook, get up, and be robbed or something. Click "Screenshots" under "Die Sims 2" on SimsZone to see all the screenshots. Also, WorldSims has posted the system requirements as they are now (they may change). This is what comes from maxis:
  • 128 MB of RAM on Windows 98, 2000, or ME, 256MB of RAM on Windows XP
  • Graphics: GeForce or Radeon Series or better
  • CPU: 600 MHz (if you have one of the video cards above). Those who have less powerful cards will need a more powerful CPU (~1.5 GHz).
  • Monitor Resolution: 800x600 minimum, 1024x768 recommended.
No mention of free space on your hard drive there (I estimate about 1.5 Gb). Anyway, more RAM is probably recommended if you're going to expand the game a lot with downloads etc. That's all that's known so far, of course the exact system requirements will be on the box. The ones listed here may still change.
