201. Lucy's Mail: E3 and Body Shop

We've received Lucy Bradshaw's weekly e-mail again, and unlike usual there is no screenshot, video or music to download. However, that will be compensated for next week during the E3, with an interview with Lucy on IGN, and with Will Wright on GameSpot. As if that's not all, a demo (which is probably a video, not a playable one) will be revealed during the E3 as well, and the Sims 2 team is working hard on making that be the best of the E3. The other part is about the Body Shop. The release day is coming really close now according to Lucy, so we can probably expect it next week. The latest rumours say 10 May, but it could also become SimDay Thursday (13 May). With the E3 in our minds, 10 May could be more likely as Maxis probably won't be doing much besides the E3 during those days. But we'll see what the near future really brings. Either way, the Body Shop is coming out really soon now and the wait is almost over. That's all from Lucy by e-mail this week, but stay tuned for all the latest sim-related news about the E3 happenings later this week. The entire e-mail is in the read more part of this article.

The
official chat Thursday brought a lot of new information about the upcoming console game, "The URBZ - Sims in the City". But today we get even more information from our friends over at
GameSpot. First there are
three new screenshots from the console version of The URBZ. Once shows off the new Create-A-Sim, as well two other shots featuring parts of the city's streets. GameSpot also has posted the first URBZ video! You can now download the
First Official Trailer for The Urbz from the site aswell. As if that's not enough, Gamespot also gives us an interview with Sinjin Bain, executive producer of The URBZ. It gives some great information on the new gameplay feature, and game concept. You can read the interview by clicking
here. Sinjin Bain promises that there will be a lot more information on The URBZ (and The Sims 2) released during the 2004 E3 convention (May 11-13, 2004). So be sure to check back a lot during that week as the information pours in.

GameSpot has posted part 7 of the Designer Diary of The Sims 2. This time Lucy Bradshaw focuses on making movies in The Sims 2. The article has some interesting information and sheds some light on the history of The Sims photo albums, and the idea of adding movie making to The Sims 2. To read the Designer Diary,
click here. The article also comes with a new video that shows off the movie making feature, which is very cool.

There seem to be problems with sending the scoop newsletter, and many people haven't received it yet. However, I've been able to find the text (with thanks to Fabian at our affiliate
SimsZone.de and
SimsStop.co.uk) online along with two new graphics, besides the two we posted
earlier today. You can see them completely by clicking the thumbnails below. The first one shows the stars of the E3, the second one is a collage of the new office of Maxis.
The scoop itself is about the Body Shop, which has gone into closed beta testing this month. It's been released to a selection of fans who were picked (quoting Maxis from another source here) "
based on past content creation efforts for Sims 1.x." The tool will be available for free download next month, but Maxis isn't giving an exact date yet. The latest rumour is May 10 which we're sticking to in the countdown, but that's not final yet.
The other part is about the E3 next month. The E3 is the biggest annual game expo in the world, held in LA. As we knew, The Sims 2 will also be shown there, and we'll be able to see some "
truly realistic Sims. Exact details are not given, but 12-14 May is definitely a time to look forward to if you like to see and read Sims 2 screenshots, videos, interviews, previews and more. Of course we'll post about all the Sims news this E3 again, so keep coming back here for details. The next scoop will also contain some more E3 material. Read more to read the text from the newsletter.

205. New Poll

The Sims has been compared to Big Brother a lot, and in a way is a reality video game. But there are many reality shows on TV, too many to list. We've made a selection of popular shows, and wonder what your favourite is. Let us know and vote on the right, or at
this page.
The previous poll was about the screenshots of The Sims 2. As many probably expected, the "Awesome! They rock!" option won. And big time: it got 72% of the votes. "They're looking quite good" came second with 'just' 21%. "I think they're alright, but not too great either." got 12 of the 220 votes, which makes 5%. "I don't really like them" and "I'm not interested in them at all" were tied with 1 vote each, making just 0.45% of the total amount. The "Blah, they look crappy" option got one more vote than that, and stays just under 1%. A nice overview can be found on
this page.

This week's SimDay is quite nice again. To start off with Bustin' Out news: Maxis has posted three new movies which tell about a Sims' worst week. Check out Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at
this page. They're all about 2 Mb in low res, or 9 Mb when you want the high quality versions.
QuickTime Required. When it comes to The Sims, Maxis has posted a link to a recent thread of the day in their BBS. If you want to know how The Sims changed other players' lifes, or if you want to share your own story,
go here. Maxis has also launched a new contest again, the "Great Dates and Dates to Hate" contest. If you can post your story about the lousiest or best date ever - real or fictious - in a family album at the exchange of the official site. You have until 14 February, Valentine's day, to submit your entry. As usual it's open to "
residents of the 50 United States (except Colorado) and the District of Columbia and Canada, excluding Quebec." If you want to know what you have to do exactly, follow
click here. For The Sims 2 news this SimDay, read on (click "Read More" if necessary).

On the BBS, Maxis has asked the viewers if they had any questions about The Sims 2 which they wanted an answer to. Maxis has done what they promised, and answered the 10 most popular questions this week. These range from the amount of floors, sleepovers, careers, death, and moving out. Maxis also sent the information that the last video, with the Sim being abducted by aliens, was captured as the game was playing. "
We have made a lot of good progress with the in game video tools and cameras. I hope you enjoyed the last video, there will be plenty more," according to Luc Barthelet. Back to the FAQ: As it's a lot of text, you'll have to click the Read More link (or just read on) to see all the questions.

209. Sims 2 Camera Info

Hot from the press, we just received some more in-depth details of the camera options and camera mode in The Sims 2 from Maxis. The "Cameraman mode" is brand new, and you have complete freedom when it comes to rotating, zooming and scrolling the camera around through the 3D area. You can also move around as if you were a Sim, and really be in the middle of all the action. It's more detailed than ever, and you have more freedom than ever. There will also be a Movie Recorder. Using that, you can create your own soap opera, sitcom, or whatever you like. All you have to do is pressing "v" in-game to start creating an AVI video. You can use a complete video control panel, which will allow you to optimize the settings for the movie recorder. That way, you can get the best quality footage from your Sims' homes. Although not explicitely mentioned, the
earlier video shows how well these two features can be combined and how they result in something never seen before with The Sims. These features make story-telling a lot better in The Sims 2. Of course, the photo album options are also still available, but those too have been much improved. For an example of that, go to
this previous news post.

A new gameplay video of The Sims 2 has appeared on the net. This time it's a big (19 Mb) and impressive one. But even though it's big, it's a must-see, especially if you want to know how spectacular being abducted by aliens is in The Sims 2, or for the camera views, or even if you just like the UFO's from SimCity. It's all in one file. If you're ready for this,
right click here and save it. Then use
QuickTime to watch it.
