How long do you have to have "lost" a pet before it becomes a stray animal? (Gamecube Version)

I had the same problem just recently, and (you might already know this) but you need to not take care of the animal so that they run away. Once they have, don't report them, and what until they "tell" you that they are not your friend anymore. (Sorry if I am wrong!)
