Plant flowers, like the tulips and wildflowers, and the dragon will eat 2-3 of these per day. Then all you have to do is buy more every few days, instead of feeding it treats 24/7.

Yes, go to build mode and the category is "landscape" or something like that. Make a big garden of the cheapest flowers. (Keep in mind that they can't eat bushes and trees.)

Dragons do eat garbage, flowers, toadstools. They'll fight toads (when a charm backfires you can get a toadplague).
Dragons eat dragon treats, give them some to prevent them from having a bad temper. Give your dragon a dragontoy so he can use it for his frustrations.
Interact with your dragon a lot, so he will not put the place on fire. Red dragons need a lot of attention, purple ones are easier to ignore a bit. Get two dragons (or a dog or cat) so they can play with each other.

Dragons can potentially eat anything they fancy, including the garbage. They will usually eat your plants first though.

My dragons eat the daffodils. I have a lot, and I find that the mean ones don't like to eat garbage (which the nicer ones will) and they will set things one fire when they get hungry and don't have flowers to eat.
