I installed Sims and House party onto my daughters PC it worked then crashed and I reinstalled however, having done this when I select play it fails with a Microsoft error “that the program has encounted a problem and needs to close.

Try using the Sim Eraser (available at the offical Sims site by Maxis). This will erase your game entirely from your computer and registry and then attempt to re-install again.
