No, you don't really need them--all a sick Sim needs is sleep, and a pregnant Sim is driven to the hospital for labour, I believe.
And no, you can't go too. XD

Whenever my sim is in labour, she always gives birth in her house (one of my sims climbed out of the bath, put her maternity clothes back on and then she went into labour!)

If a Sim becomes an Inventor (level 6) or higher in the Science career, they unlock the Simsanto Biotech Station. Here, Sims with high Logic skill (high Hygiene and overall mood also help) can Make Medicine; when this is done, the sick Sim can Take Medicine. The more potent the medicine, the more likely it is to work.
