can you change the sims clothes any time after creating the family? i ask because when a kid sim grows up, it's clothes are randomly chosen for it, and i don't really like the clothes given to my teenage sim.

Buy a wardrobe and go to the community centre and buy clothes. When you get home clothes should be in the waredrobe - then click plan outfit. To then change the clothes in the picture on the control panel have the sim click on a mirror and change apperance - (you don't actually have to change anything it just updates it)

so if i click change apperance, it wont just be change their hair and makeup, it'll be clothes too? what communal lot has clothes for sale?

Sorry I was being a bit confusing.
If you have a wardrobe you can buy clothes from any communal lot that has clothes racks in it and when you get home they should be in the wardrobe and you can click plan outfit to change what your sim wears. (If you buy clothes for the age group the sim is about to become then it will use those clothes as the default when the sim grows up). Play around with it and i'm sure you'll work out all the cool things.

Regarding the mirror - it does just change hair and makeup and face accesories not clothes.
However it has the added bones of updating the sims picture - including clothing - on the control panel. So if you really hate what they are wearing in that picture you can use the mirror to change it to the new clothing you have made them wear using the wardrobe.
