I've heard that Sims can comunicate through e-mails. Is this true?

Indeed, they chat on the computer.

Note that this throws up its own set of irregularities though, namely that all members of a family can be online at the same time - including seven babies and the mum. See my extra - "Sims 2 - Bugs, Problems, Solutions" on this site.
