question cont'd: (wouldnt fit in the question)

Specs: 2.8ghz ht p4, 512ddr dual channeled ram, Radeon 9700pro,
soundblaster live!, win xp, service pack 1 + 2, all win updates, etc.

I tried reformatting, tried all catalyst vid drivers for the radeon from 4.0 to 4.9,
tried sound card drivers, tried removing the sound card and using onboard sound,
tried installing sims on each drive incase it was a hdd conflict,
tried installing both the cd and dvd version,
tried mobo drivers etc...

Nothing worked.

If anyone has any idea that might help beyond the basics
(because ive tried just about every possible thing that you can try
short of buying a new mobo). No idea why i want to play this game so so bad, because
i felt that the original sims game was a tad slow.. but i can't sleep until i
know that i'm getting a game i've paid for to work.

I get the same crash, but right when the game is loading. I have a new install of WinXP, almost identical specs to you, and have loaded all the patches including SP2. I'll keep trying to find out what's wrong, but if you solve it please post the solution.

I had reinstalled the game twice with no luck. Then I checked the disk I was installing to, and realized it needed some defragmenting. I messed around for a while, then also realized that Norton was holding a GB of data in it's separate recycle bin on that drive. I cleared that, defragged, reinstalled, and now it works perfectly.
