No, having Maya won't help much either. They may have used Maya to make the original models, but they are currently in a proprietary format. The Sims 2 package files. They contain all the data, the texture bitmap images and some XML to tell the software how to handle and animate the object. Most high end 3d editors store the bitmap texture and everything else as separate files.
So we just have to wait until Maxis lets us have an editor, or a hacker figures out how to make small changes to the file without corrupting it.
Until such time, you can change the colors and textures of hair in the body shop that comes with the sims 2.
